To be or not to be... commissioned

I'm looking at a career in the military and would like to know which would be better for a grunt... earn a commission (through college or other means) or retire as enlisted? My uncle is about to retire from the Army as enlisted and he has quite an impressive retirement to look forward to, but I don't know what perks there may be for officers. Oh and to be more branch specific... Marine Corps - Semper Fi

I think this is just a matter of preference. I can not imagine bein an Officer after the time I put in as an enlisted. It is just a matter of what you want to get out of The Corps.
