Go to a rifle range. I can't say as I have ever heard a ecording that was accurate.
P.S. the noise that you really don't want to hear is the "pop" of a bullet going overhead trailing a sonic boom.

I've found it more of a sharp crack, rather then a "pop", when the round passes overhead, and then you hear the "thud" of the weapon.

Under what circumstances have you heard bullets passing overhead?

Working in the butts party at Murray Bridge Range and Bindoon training area.

(for those who don't know, the butts party is located just in front of the impact mound, in a trench like position of course. They raise and lower targets manually. Hence the bullets going overhead just before they hit the impact mound).
