No charges against British reservist suspected of faking pictures of Iraqi
detainee abuse

LONDON - (AP) A British reservist investigated in connection with
faked photos purporting to show British soldiers abusing Iraqi detainees
will not face charges, prosecutors said Friday.
The Crown Prosecution Service said it had considered charging Pvt.
Stuart Mackenzie with obtaining property by deception, but ultimately
decided there was not enough evidence to convict him.
The Daily Mirror printed photos in May 2004 purporting to show the
abuse, which included a British soldier allegedly urinating on a hooded
Iraqi prisoner.
The newspaper later acknowledged the images were fakes. It printed a
front-page apology and top editor Piers Morgan stepped down.

If that young trooper was in my outfit, he would be cleaning grease pits for the rest of his enlistment, at attention.

How did the newspaper get it?
I found the article. It looks like a couple of soldiers just fooled the paper for money but won't name the sources. No names, no charges.

Labour and Conservative backbenchers have criticised the Mirror for publishing the pictures, which appear to show British soldiers urinating on and beating an Iraqi prisoner, despite concerns over their authenticity. Morgan was also criticised for paying a fee, believed to be £20,000, to the soldiers for their story.

But he also urged the paper to pass on the names of the two soldiers from the Queen's Lancashire Regiment who had made the allegations so their claims could be investigated, adding he was confident those with information would be "treated fairly and lawfully".

The paper adds that it would refuse to reveal the identity of the whistleblowers from the Queen's Lancashire Regiment.

A Crown Prosecution Service spokesman said lawyers had advised the Ministry of Defence Police there was insufficient evidence for a "realistic prospect of conviction" against Private Stuart Mackenzie.
