NEW ORLEANS - New Orleans was awarded next year's ArenaBowl, the city's first professional championship game since Hurricane Katrina.
The announcement Monday at the New Orleans Arena was the fulfillment of a commitment made by the AFL's Board of Directors to bring the championship game to New Orleans when it was "economically and logistically feasible."
Weeks after Hurricane Katrina hit in August 2005, the VooDoo suspended operations for the 2006 season because of damage to the city and the arena.
New Orleans owner Tom Benson said the VooDoo is on pace to sell out all of their season tickets before the home schedule begins March 9. Next year's ArenaBowl will be played July 29.
