The U.S. Naval Academy has selected a 1982 graduate as its new commandant of midshipmen.
Capt. Matthew L. Klunder will replace Capt. Margaret D. Klein next month. He will be responsible for training, disciplining and morally developing midshipmen.
Klunder, a native of Alexandria, graduated with a degree in physics before receiving a master's degree in aerodynamics and aviations systems and a master's degree in strategic studies.
Klunder commanded an air wing that participated in relief efforts in Southeast Asia after the tsunami in 2004 and in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Klein will become the Navy's operations officer after her promotion to rear admiral next month. She was the Naval Academy's first female commandant and a member of the second class of midshipmen to include women.
