[FONT=Times New Roman, Times, serif]The first round was successfully fired Oct. 23 from the new Non-Line-of-Sight (NLOS) cannon being developed for the Army’s Future Combat Systems, BAE Systems announced Oct. 31.
Tests of the ultra-lightweight, fully automated 38-caliber, 155mm howitzer are being conducted from a firing platform that includes the gun, a fully automated ammunition handling system and a tracked test chassis. The tests were made at the Army’s Yuma Proving Grounds in Arizona, said Ryan Mae, spokesman for BAE Systems.

At least six single-round test shots were made the rest of the week, Mae, said. The tests will be followed by rate-of-fire testing to demonstrate the gun’s automated handling system, intended to fire a four-round Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact mission.
The firing platform was developed for the gun tests, allowing the Army to certify the gun for safety, Mae said. A full-up chassis continues under development, he said, and is to be rolled out in 2008.
