WASHINGTON — San Antonio civic and business leaders said Tuesday they would continue their push to land the headquarters of a newly created cyberspace command after the Air Force placed it temporarily in Louisiana. Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne, during a 60th anniversary of the Air Force event, announced that a provisional headquarters for the new command would be at Barksdale AFB near Shreveport.
But Air Force officials made clear a permanent site for the command headquarters has yet to be selected.
"While a number of basing locations for a permanent command staff are being considered and evaluated, no final decisions have been made," said Maj. Gen. Charles Ickes, the special assistant to the deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and requirements.
San Antonio is one of several cities looking to land the new headquarters, which will oversee training, organizing and equipping personnel from active duty, guard, reserve and civilian ranks.
The new cyberspace command will develop secure computer networks and provide network security and strategies.
The city is already home to the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency, the Cryptologic Systems Group, 67th Network Warfare Wing, the Information Operations Center and the Joint Information Operation Warfare Command — all at Lackland AFB.
Many of those components will have missions under the new cyber command.
Additionally, Microsoft and the National Security Agency are locating facilities to San Antonio.
Officials in Nebraska have pushed Offutt AFB for the headquarters, and California has mentioned Beale AFB near Yuba City.
The new cyberspace command will include missions under the 8th Air Force, which is at Barksdale.
While officials in other cities voiced disappointment in their chances of landing the permanent headquarters after Barksdale was selected as a temporary site, San Antonio business leaders said they would continue to argue the case.
Joe Krier, Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce president, said he takes the Air Force at its word that a final site is yet to be selected.
A final selection is expected within a year, said Charles Gulik, an Air Force spokesman. "That's our goal."
