Dear gentlemen,

Many of you who have posted in this section have surpised me with your knowledge on World War II. I have been in the possession of a picture taken somewhere in ´43 or ´44 and I´ve tried to find out what the medals are about. I am having difficulty tracing the ones above his left chest pocket. This man fought in World War I as well, so they could be from that era too... I don´t know, the German military archives haven´t answered me (yet) so could you help me?

It would help to know the colors of the ribbons in question.

That's my problem exactly; I don't know the colors. I was hoping to link them to some medal because of the crossed swords on the right ribbon. Could they be Iron Crosses 1 and 2, given for actions in WW I?

I think you're looking at three ribbons, the German ribbons were shorter in length than most countries. Here's a link.

http://www.medals.lava.pl/de/de3.htm

On the left, I guess is- Austria Ehrenzeichen 2. Klasse des Deutschen Roten Kreuzes (1922-39)
Medaille des Deutschen Roten Kreuzes (1937-39)

In the middle - Austria Bosnisch-Herzegowinische Erinnerungsmedaille, 1909

On the right- Same as the first with crossed swords.
