Nearly half of S. Korean fighter jets remain grounded due to safety concerns
혻혻 GYERYONGDAE, South Korea, Oct. 24 (Yonhap) -- South Korea operated only 50-70 percent of its 500 fighter jets in the first eight months of this year because of maintenance amid safety concerns, Air Force data showed Wednesday.

혻 혻 In a report to an opposition lawmaker for an ongoing parliamentary audit on its affairs that is under way here at the Gyeryongdae military compound, the Air Force said only 60 percent of about 130 KF-16 jets in the country were engaged in normal operations during the period.

혻 혻 It grounded dozens of KF-16 fighter jets to check possible engine problems, after one of the jets in the fleet crashed in February due to engine failure.

혻혻 As for advanced F-15K jets, only 70 percent of them here were in service, according to Rep. Maeng Hyung-gyu of the Grand National Party.
