VIRGINIA BEACH--The Navy has named Rear Adm. Carol Pottenger to lead Navy Expeditionary Combat Command at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base.
Pottenger, the first female admiral to command a forward deployed amphibious force, currently leads Expeditionary Strike Group Seven in Okinawa, Japan.
She succeeds Rear Adm. Donald Bullard, who led the expeditionary command since its inception in 2005 and retired in January. The 40,000-sailor force encompasses active duty and reserve units focused on ground and coastal water duties. It includes explosive ordnance disposal, riverine units, naval construction, diving and salvage, logistics and maritime security.
Pottenger is a 1977 graduate of Purdue University and was commissioned through Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. She was among the first women selected for sea duty and joined the destroyer tender Yosemite as an engineering division officer.
