Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan "have been degraded" to the point they can't launch a spring offensive, a NATO spokesman said. Brig. Gen. Richard Nugee said there likely will be an increase in violence as the weather warms up, but "an offensive is a very symbolic phrase. It means a huge upsurge in a very short amount of time. We just don't think that will happen."
In fighting Wednesday, Afghan and NATO troops killed 30 suspected Taliban militants in Helmand province, police chief Ghulam Nabi Mulakhel said. The troops surrounded a compound believed to be a Taliban base in Kajaki district and fought a five-hour battle backed by air support, Mulakhel said.
