The $300 million expansion of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans began this week. The first two buildings in the expansion are scheduled to be open next year, and the completed project, including a theater, restaurant and entertainment venue dubbed the Stage Door Canteen, is expected to be finished by 2015. The 400-seat theater, which is being developed in cooperation with Tom Hanks, will show documentaries and history-themed films. Hanks is honorary chairman of the museum expansion's capital campaign. Called the D-Day Museum when it opened June 6, 2000, the museum was renamed in 2004 when Congress designated it the nation's official World War II museum.
