SAN JUAN — Puerto Rico's Gov. Anibal Acevedo Vila said Friday he may activate the National Guard to halt a surge in killings that has claimed 41 lives in the first 12 days of the year, more than double for the same period last year.
The most recent murders came Friday when a witness to an earlier slaying was shot to death while driving in a San Juan suburb, police said. More than 100 bullet casings were discovered at the scene.
The violence has forced two schools located in public housing projects in the San Juan suburb of Rio Piedras to remain closed after the end of the Christmas holidays.
Most of the slayings are drug-related, said Police Superintendent Pedro Toledo.
