N.J. Residents: Is Is a Cat or Panther?
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - Residents in the rural New Jersey community of Vineland are used to seeing wild turkey, the occasional deer and once in a great while, even a bear. But reports that a black panther has been roaming the woods have some people worried. Residents over the weekend reported seeing...

A Black Panther.

Doubtful, they aren't native to North America. They are Jungle Cats, they aren't accustomed to cold weather. Panthers are usually found in places like India. The Biggest Cat we have in North America is the Mountain Lion (or Cougar) and those are native to the Western States not NJ.

The only possible chance is some monumental idiot illegally imported a cub (an endangered species, no less) from India and then discovered that it was too much to handle when it became a adult and released it into the NJ wild. People might remember the Chinese Snakehead incident in Maryland a few years back...

If thats the case, they should lock the cat with its owner in the same cage at the zoo and call the exhibit:

"Indian Black Panther -very rare, + North American Idiot -overpopulated".
