I saw a doco called "four hours at my lai" on my last course at Puckapunyal (IIIA3). It was pretty crazy. Despite the fact it was shown to us by the padre, it was pretty intense (for those that don't know, padre visits are usually a good chance for a nap). They interviewed some of the the guys who were there, and that were mental basket cases. One guy was talking about the fact he killed at least 25 women and children on that day, scalping, cutting out tongues etc. They were all so disturbed and mentally unstable it wasn't funny.

The My Lai massacre was perhaps the best known atrocity of the war against Viet Nam. What is not very well known is that there were heroic GIs who, at great risk to themselves, chose humanity over uniform in the midst of that horrible moment. This site shows that there were others who did the right thing at My Lai.

Another site about the other side of the story.

The reason I have posted so many site here is so that you may get a balanced view of this terrible tragedy.

Neither! I am just fed up with stupid anti-America rhetoric here!

Don't forget to mention in your report that while the US killed hundreds at My Lai the Viet Cong/NVA buried an entire village of 10,000, bonus points if you can name that village because right now I am drawing a blank.

Are you thinking of Hue?

I'm not familiar with the 10K number, though.

I did read a statistic once that claimed the NVA killed over 400k civilians due to their indirect firing alone.

Still though, if he is writing a report about Americans in Vietnam, there is no reason to excuse our actions by defending them with the actions of another group.

Not one comment in this thread has shown even a hit of anti-Americanism, or even rhetoric.

Will you deny the facts? The My Lai incident did occur, want to know another massacre that happened at the hands of Americans during Vietnam? Read up on Son My.

Should we not discuss something because it may cast an unfavorable light on American history, despite the historical facts? Are we not allowed to discuss our bad decisions so that we never repeat them again?

The US is a great country, but we aren't above mistakes, esp when human *******s are involved. It's not anti-American to discuss the past or past events that may be negative.
