A musical question

Found this Christmas carol (at least I think it’s a Christmas carol) and was wondering what style of music it is classed as, I really like it and was wondering if anyone knew of songs similar to this and in the same style
I looked up the band quickly on youtube but although they had music there that I liked, they only seemed to have songs that were accompanied by musical instruments and I’m interested mainly in songs where the singers rely solely on their voice

The King – performed by Steeleye Span

We have traveled many miles over hedges and stiles in search of our king unto you we bring we have powder and shot to conquer the lot we have cannon and ball to conquer them all
Bold christmas is past 12th tide is the last and we bid you adieu, great Joy to the new

It'd be classified as a cappella music, KillKill.

The King's Singers is one of the premier vocal a cappella groups in the world.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PTZG2cHM5g&feature=related This is Chanticleer, another top notch vocal ensemble that uses SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) voicing in their music, instead of just male voices. The men who sing soprano and alto are using "falsetto," literally "false voice" to sing so high. Some male singers have a naturally higher placed voice than other men, they are called "countertenors."

Feel free to PM me for more information, I'm a vocal music major. LOL

Yeah. Ask Rob. He's a musical genius. Who's going to Italy without me. :crybaby:

When I referred to the style of music what I was really after was the time period, I think its from something like the 16th century (or round abouts) also English and religious. Sorry I probably should have narrowed down what I was after a little better.
I liked the links you sent but their songs seem a little too modern and I was after something a bit more period specific although having said that, the singers are quite talented and might have to get a CD
Thanks again for your help.

My apologies. Yeah, you're pretty spot on with the time frame. They don't just do modern music. You can find them singing Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, even plainsongs and chant. Your best bet will be Chanticleer. The King's Singers do more modern pop music, but Chanticleer is a more classically oriented group. Another good group you could check out for men's voices (true to the old ways of the church) is Cantus.

And if you're interested in slightly larger ensembles, just ask. I'm more of a choral music buff, so that's more my area of expertise. I just love Chanticleer for their ability to make such amazing sounds with only 12 men. It blows me away.
