Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf hailed the start of a "new era of real democracy" in his country and vowed to support an incoming government led by political foes.
"The journey toward democracy and development we started eight years ago is now reaching its destination," said Musharraf, who seized power in a 1999 military coup. Musharraf quit the military in November but retains sweeping presidential powers.
