Anyone here ride, own or just enjoy motorbikes? Anyone follow bike racing? Also anyone have any suggestions on a bike for a first-timer (me)?

I ride... Best advice for a new rider, wait another two years before starting. Think about it before you do it, and get rid of any bravado or ego before you even get on a bike or you will end up dead or in traction. It is very hard to ride well, and very easy to ride very badly.

Take your time, and learn from others.
A good place to learn is here
http://www.cr-x.org/cbr250/forum/

Although it's focus is on CBR250s, it also deals with all other bikes. There is so much knowledge there, and since your a new rider, a "small" sports bike is the only smart way to start, so I suggest you check it out (mostly Aussies and Irish there, but some American members also).

My first bike was a Honda VT 250R - not too bad but had to get a reco engine after a few years. Then got a Kawasaki 750 GPZ - beautiful bike and have tried most Kwaka range so recommend them in 250cc to 900cc range.
