A series of coordinated car and truck bombs and small-arms attacks in Mosul have left two bridges destroyed, a jail damaged, and several Iraqi police dead and wounded.
As many as 200 insurgents were involved in the attacks, which took place this week, Iraqi and U.S. officials said Friday.
Four truck bombs targeted the two bridges, which span the Tigris River near the city. One Iraqi soldier, five Iraqi police and one civilian were killed in those attacks. Four other Iraqi soldiers were wounded, U.S. military officials said.
“The [truck bombs] destroyed both bridges,” the U.S. military said in a statement released Friday.
Later, three car bombs were used to attack what officials described as a “transient jail.” Five Iraqi police were killed, in addition to 21 police and 17 civilians wounded.
There was no information on whether prisoners at the facility were freed during the attack.
The U.S. Forward Operating Base Marez also received small-arms and indirect fire, officials said. Further attacks in the city included both direct- and indirect-fire attacks on police stations and the al Jamouri Hospital, officials said.
“The actions of these terrorists show their cowardice,” Col. Steven Twitty, the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division commander, was quoted as saying.
“These attacks demonstrate the desperation of these terrorists. They have no concern for the good Iraqi people, who now must suffer from damaged hospitals, bridges and homes.”
Mosul is a key city at the northern tip of Iraq in Ninewah province. It has been the site of sometimes-fierce fighting over the four-year span of the war, and has also seen periods of relative calm.
