Almost all of the oily substance that was splashed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in September has been removed, the National Park Service said yesterday.
Park Service spokesman Bill Line said 95 to 98 percent of the still-unidentified substance has been cleaned off. He said park experts think that deeper cleaning might damage the surface of the memorial and that sunlight will probably bleach out the faint remaining stains by spring.
Vietnam veterans are celebrating the black granite wall's 25th anniversary this weekend. A $10,000 reward is being offered for information on whoever was responsible for the vandalism.
