Russia's defense minister announced a sweeping overhaul of the military that will cut hundreds of generals and disband nine of every 10 army units.
Though the military was slashed to 1.13 million from the 4 million-member Soviet army, little had been done to trim the number of officers. On paper, the military has about the same number of military units as in the Soviet era.
By 2012, Russia will reduce its armed forces to 1 miIlion, including about 150,000 officers, Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov said. The number of generals will be cut to 900 from 1,100 through retirement .
