BAGHDAD, Oct 25, 2006 (AFP) - Unidentified attackers lobbed mortar shells
into downtown Baghdad on Wednesday, two of which detonated inside the
heavily-fortified Green Zone, a security official said.

City centre buildings on the west bank of the Tigris were rocked by several
loud detonations and plumes of smoke could be seen rising over the walled
district, which is the seat of the Iraqi government and US embassy.

No-one was injured in the attack on the Green Zone, the official said, but
a female civilian was wounded when another shell exploded in Haifa Street
in a mixed area further to the north which is often the scene of insurgent
violence.

Meanwhile, US fighter jets wheeled overhead and thick columns of smoke rose
over the horizon northwest of the city centre, near Baghdad airport.

Baghdad is in the grip of a vicious sectarian war between rival Sunni and
Shiite factions and an insurgency against the US-backed government, which
is struggling to restore order in the aftermath of the March 2003 US
invasion.
