Monitoring China's Meddling

I think the EU would be a better candidate for a superpower balance to the US. The only thing the EU must achieve to attain this goal would be to overcome their petty differences (i.e. official EU language, currency, government, bureaucrats, etc.). You also forgot to mention that more and more Asian countries feel threatened by China's military spending. A nation isn't going to the best of trading partners if one party feels threatened by another.

The EU will never be a super power because of its national differences the English have enough difficulty in accepting or admitting to being European, hell its hard enough to sell them on the idea of a single currency Satan will be wearing thermals before they speak a common language.

All this "the Chinese are evil and will take over the world" rhetoric we get on this board (which may or may not be right) every time someone brings up the word "superpower" continually over looks the fact that there is next to nothing that can be done to stop it. Seriously what are the options:
1) Ask nicely and hope they shelve all technical and military development - probably not going to work and there isn't a country on earth that would do it.
2) Sanction them back to the stone age - Considering the amount of dodgy bastards that will sell anything for a dollar I doubt that will work, you might slow them up but I am certain they will be mighty upset when they do get there.
3) Attack them in some sort of pre-emptive strike - Well isn't that exactly what we are afraid they will do and if indeed that is the plan then surely it makes their military build up justified.

Simple - Chi-Coms are evil.

Reason why, it's a communist government. I was born and raised in a communist country. I have seen the "wonders" of the socialist system. Red China is the same as Cuba, expect with a better economy. Secert police roam the streets and round up folks the talk against the government.

Red China is spending cash like it's going out of style. They are buying so many materials needed for the production of ammunition that the general prices of ammunition here in the US have gone up tri-fold. They are buying gas like it's free, same reason why gas prices are so high. They have bought more weapons from the Russians and others and also have built up national arms industry that can supply it's forces with need material.

Red China is looking to become a world superpower. They want Taiwan, they know that the USA, Japan, and maybe Australia will help defend Taiwan from Chi-Com aggression. Hence the reason why the Chi-Coms are building their military faster than any other nation right now.

Said it once and I'll say it again. The Devil is a knocking and he has a made in China sticker on his ass.

Bullddog India, Tibet, Xinjiang were annexed back in the 60's when the communist party then could play the soviets off against america, when there was little threat against this play. Quite a few countries have invaded others when the odds were good. China is no exception. Yes there has been repression, i am not saying every country is squeaky clean but china has improved over the years.

In every country too, there are limits imposed on citizens, things that can and can't be done.

Its true, i have not lived through the cold war, but what i have lived through i have come to see that a multipolar world would keep one hyper power in check, so that politcal matters can be discussed on a more even and rational footing. I'm sure that there are many who agree with me in the wordl on this one. If you think that this opinion is bollocks, fair do's, its your opinion.

"Five, it would serve you well to educate yourself as to the reality of the situation instead of the rosy colored state sponsored propaganda being spoonfed to the Scottish people by your current PM's agenda of selling out Scotland to the Chinese because of an overdeveloped sense of guilt from plundering of millions of pounds from the Chinese in days gone by."

Mate, i do not believe you were in touch with reality when you typed this response i'm sorry. How is Scotland being sold out to the Chinese? Is scotland doing more business with the Chinese? Yes, every country is, big deal. Rosy coloured state sponsered propaganda being spoon fed to the people of scotland? How, when, and where does this happen Bulldog?

Is this tony blairs key agenda for all of us scots? Is blair doing what you say because he feels guilty about what happened 100's of years ago? No on both accounts mate.

I believe that you have a very big chip on your shoulder about china but you have your views and i respect that. It just appears that in this thread you have been country bashing china constantly and then you started country bashing scotland to insult me. And you don't have to do this at all to get your point of view across Bulldog.

Now, China is not perfect and it could do with a great deal of improvement but i think its heading on the road to better things. I'm not saying its the most wonderful thing since sliced bread nor am i saying that china is heroic in anyway. China is rising and as MontyB said, there is little that can be done to stop it. Lets not start running around with pitch forks shouting "Down with the Chinese!", lets deal with the country rationaly, using all available options. If there comes a time when military action is justified over taiwan then by all means, strike hard and fast, but untill then please be a bit more rational about the issue and less of this sabre rattling.

One of my closest friends is Scottish. From Edinburgh, he's a masters student studying Chinese. Edinburgh is secretly building a "settlement" for Chinese immigrants. At a recent event closed to the public the Mayor of Edinburgh in concert with some Scottish MPs held a dinner with Chinese students and dignitaries. Such things were mentioned about making atonement for the plundering of China during the opium wars. Edinburgh University is still sitting on a gold mine from the Opium Wars. Toasts which were uttered included "We drink from the greatest little country to the greatest big country"... so perhaps instead of Scotland I should have narrowed it down to Edinburgh.

No country bashing. These are just ugly truths.

As for my opinions on China, come for a stay, after you live here for four years I'll listen to any criticism on my views of this place you can muster.

Some people are really clueless and this is the scary part of the world...They have been taken for the ride and they believe all they hear....

Two words for this thread:

DOUBLE STANDARDS!
Number one: True, they do use dual-use technology. Their arms industry have made leaps because of this ,however many of the technology they have acquired are not up to par with the US. The GPS signals used for their smart weapons are Civilian grade GPS signals.

If you think China will become a military superpower, think again. Compared to the weapons of their neighbors (Japan or South Korea), the majority of their equipment are not impressive. That is why they are spending billions in replacing the old equipment that have been salvaged, recycled, and re-used until today. Due to the chaotic situation of the Cultural Revolution, the PLA budget have been seriously limited during the early 70's and 80's.

This is obvious for most nations. If a nation becomes more wealthy, so will the military establishment.

Better economy, better guns.

Number two: China uses soft power to gain influence around the world. Unlike the US who still supports regime-change through ideology such as spreading Democracy around the world, it appears the Chinese are more concerned about establishing better trade ties. The authors can pounce China all they want about Latin America and Africa's ties with China, in fact the Global South prefers Chinese loans rather than the IMF World Bank's loans. The IMF has preconditions and conditions AKA Austerity Plans that have already created serious damages to the Global South's social progress as well as their domestic economy. Jamaica is the prime example of the IMF's failure.

Speaking of Quasi-alliances, China does not support in establishing a bloc of its own. They consider blocs an obsolescent Cold War security institution, according to their strategic thought.

Number three: Why does China censors information and the internet? Its because of GLOBALIZATION. Globalization and the internet has no respect for territorial boundaries. The problems with Globalization is that it is western-dominated: socially, culturally, politically, and ideologically. If these ideas have flood into China today without certain restrictions, it creates social and political instability. The Tiananmen Square Massacre is a prime example of this effect.

China is not the only nation in the world that censors the internet intensively. Egypt and Turkey are also known to jail journalists, bloggers, and censors the net because of political dissent. Combining China and Internet Censorship in the same sentence is discriminatory.

Either way, the eastern mentality follows up to the Hobbesian perspective.

Number four: Democracy and Nationalism leads to war. http://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/POLSYS.ART.HTM

With a population of 1.3 Billion people, there is a large portion of those who want to greet Japan in the battlefield and to reclaim Taiwan quick. If China wishes to develop peacefully, it needs a mechanism to suppress this sentiment. That mechanism is one party rule led by a rational leadership.

In terms of Chinese Foreign Policy, China does not follow the Liberal idealogy or any western idealogy. Instead it appears there are traditional and indeginous models that shapes its policies.

To best describe Chinese Politicians, they appear to be neo-realists.

Notable neo-Realists:

Hobbes
Machiavelli
Kenneth Waltz
Fareed Zakaria

Notable realists in office:

Henry Kissinger
Brent Screwcoft

The problem with these two articles is that they contain liberal bias. In fact many of you who claim yourselves to be Conservatives and viciously attack leftists have the either confused about which is which or have turned the ideologies upside down.

Nice apology.

Double standards assumes that all parties and their details are equal and they are not.

Then therefore you are subjecting to favoritism since you said the "details" are not equal.

Elaborate to me what exactly the details are you refering to?

Sorry but it has to wait for a week. In the interest of forum decorum and following the rules I am on a self-imposed ban for the next six days from posting on anything political.

I'm in the midst of a fast and I am more than a little surly when I am hypoglycemic. Cheers for understanding.
