ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. — The Army says it’s suspending outdoor weapons testing at Picatinny Arsenal after a wayward artillery shell fragment crashed through the roof of a home miles away.
Brig. Gen. William Phillips, Picatinny’s commanding general, said a team from the base will investigate what caused the mishap.
Authorities say a 2-pound piece of artillery shot crashed through the roof of Cheryl Angle’s Jefferson Township home about 2:30 p.m. Friday.
The hot metal landed on the bed of Angle’s 10-yearold daughter. The daughter luckily wasn’t home, but the family’s cat was injured and had to be euthanized.
Phillips said in the statement that he visited the Angle home Friday night and apologized.
