WASHINGTON (AP) - America's growing diversity has reached nearly every state.

From South Carolina's budding immigrant population to the fast-rising number of Hispanics in Arkansas, minority groups make up an increasing share of the population in every state but one, according to figures released Tuesday by the Census Bureau.

``This is just an extraordinary explosion of diversity all across the United States,'' said William Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. ``It's diversity and immigration going hand in hand.''

West Virginia is the exception, with its struggling economy and little history of attracting immigrants.

Frey said states that attract large numbers of immigrants can consider it a ``badge of economic success.'' There have, however, been backlashes.
``In some places it will be awhile before they are accepted by the locals,'' Frey said. ``All we have to do is look at this immigration debate.''
Immigration policy is a big issue in this year's midterm congressional elections, and the new data help explain why. Immigrants - legal and illegal - make up a growing portion of the population in 46 states and the District of Columbia. Nationally, they went from 11.1 percent of the population in 2000 to 12.4 percent last year.

The 2005 figures are from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey, which is replacing the ``long form'' on the 10-year census. Starting this year, the annual survey of about 3 million households provides yearly data on communities of 65,000 or larger. By 2010, it will provide annual multiyear averages for the smallest neighborhoods covered by the 10-year census.

The data released Tuesday cover, race, immigration, education and age characteristics. Economic and housing data will be released in the coming weeks.

The survey, which cost $170 million in 2005, has limitations. For example, only people living in households were surveyed. That excludes the 3 percent of people who live in nursing homes, hospitals, college dormitories, military barracks, prisons and other dwellings known as group quarters.
Also, the numbers for Gulf Coast states do not reflect the effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, which scattered hundreds of thousands of people last year.

Among the findings:

-Education levels increased in every state from 2000 to 2005. Nationally, the share of adults 25 and older with at least a high school diploma increased from 80 percent to 84 percent. The share of adults with at least a bachelor's degree increased from 24 percent to 27 percent.
-Every state is getting older. Nationally, the median age - the one at which half the population is older and half is younger - went from 35.3 in 2000 to 36.4 last year.

-Hispanics increased their hold as the country's largest minority group, at 14.5 percent of the population, compared with 12.8 percent for blacks.

Hispanic is a term for people with ethnic backgrounds in Spanish- speaking countries. Hispanics can be of any race, and most in the U.S. are white. When demographers talk about the shrinking percentage of white people in America, generally they are talking about whites who are not Hispanic.

-Such whites are a minority in four states - Hawaii, New Mexico, California and Texas - and the District of Columbia. The share of white people fell below 60 percent in three other states - Maryland, Georgia and Nevada. Nationally, non-Hispanic whites make up about 67 percent of the population, down from 70 percent at the start of the decade.

California, New York, Texas and Florida have the nation's largest immigrant populations. The new data show that immigrants will travel beyond those states if there are jobs available.

South Carolina's immigrant population grew by 47 percent since 2000, more than any other state. Hispanics grew by 48 percent in Arkansas, the most of any state.

Michael MacFarlane, South Carolina's state demographer, said immigrants and Hispanics were attracted by a healthy economy that offered jobs requiring few skills.

``They are in all sorts of construction, food processing, service jobs, the whole spectrum, where they used to be primarily in agriculture,'' MacFarlane said.

West Virginia, meanwhile, was one of only two states in which the percentage of white people grew. The other was Hawaii, where whites are an increasing minority.

It doesn't take a mathematical genius to figure this one out ... with the estimated 10-20 million illegal aliens in the country, it is no wonder that minorities are on the increase. I fully realize this is NOT the only reason ... but ... it can't help but have a noticable difference.

Yeah and a major problem is the ones coming in here thinking that we should adapt to them....

The immigrants of yester year learned the language and stuck with the traditions...granted they also kept their own traditions but they respected those of the new nation...

Just my thoughts..........

It takes generations to adapt so many people to the USA. Consider that every major immigration group; the irish, italian, scottish, english, german, african, etc. did not adapt immediatley but kept their old country habits intact while doing just enough to get along with the mainstream culture. Some groups were different in others by the degree they changed, but there wasn't any of them that wanted full and immediate assimilation into American culture since it wasn't that big of a deal back then.

The children of those groups did go into the mainstream culture and are everywhere now, most of their ancestral culural aspects are gone. Same thing will happen to the new immigrants whose children grow up here and learn english and might even be bilingual. If you're around in 20 or so years, the change will be obvious.

I know some people are miffed that immigrant groups these days don't seem to want to change their attitudes to the cultural norms, but you wouldn't either in a foreign country that you don't know much about. I figure, the more we help them assimilate the better.

As for the illegals, what can you do at this point except ship off some and naturalize the rest? They are in the millions and deporting most of them would be an exodus that could create overwhelming problems. All we can do is tighten the borders and and revise the immigration policy.

In a recent release from the Census Bureau, it was disclosed for the 2nd year in a row ... illegal Mexicans are the fastest growing minority population in the United States. This is the first time since this statistic has been recorded where this has happened, and indications are that it will hold true for the coming year also.

Being the melting pot of the world is one thing when the minorities adapt all of America's ways ... it is quite a different story when these groups refuse to blend in. After all, this is the United States of America NOT Mexico. If you are going to live and work in this country, then you d*mned sure owe this country something more than disdain for our language, our flag, our form of government and lastly but not leastly ... you owe adherence to our laws.

If you think that I believe that ALL illegal aliens should ALL be given a one way ticket back to Mexico, then you are right ... and ... that includes every member of their family. After all, you should not benefit from the proceeds of your crime, and in this case why this should be viewed in any other way, is beyond me.

No it doesn't. I wasn't born in the USA and I'm 100% American. I fully have intergrated into the culture of America, I speak English, I read English. Hell, if you talk to me over the phone you'd never know that I was hispanic. It comes down to how much people love America. I love this land and I have become American.

I drive a Ford F-150, listen to Metallica, hunt and fish, dress country, and lastly. I support this country with every ounce of my body.

Unfortunately I see the same theme here. Everyone presumes that all illegal aliens are Hispanic/Mexican. I agree with Chief in spirit if not in context:

Give all illegal aliens a one way ticket back to their country of origin!!

Part of the problem is that the Hispanic/Mexican group has been so vocal and so 'in the news' lately. And it doesn't help that for two years running (a first), they are the fastest growing minority group in the nation. It has been bad enough that in a few scattered areas, they have become the majority group.

So no wonder people have the misconception that all of the illegals are of Hispanic/Mexican heritage.

Funny I never heard a Italian, French, German, Polish, Swiss, Norwegian, Romanian, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, and so on version of the Star Spangled Banner, nor have I seen ever or even heard of any demand for teachers to speak those languages....

Let's also not forget who cheered during 9/11 and when the American soccer team came on the field who chanted Osama Osama.....

Just my cents

I'm also slightly biased 2 illegal Mexican immigrants killed my best friend, my brother...They pulled out in front of him on his motorcycle...then backed into the car behind them panicked and ran over my buddy while he was laying in the middle of the road....It happened during rush hour so other people chased them down and got them off the road, when the cops showed up they didn’t speak any English...Last I heard they got deported, yeah that's fair...

Don’t get me wrong I have a whole bunch of Mexican friends...guess what they are here legally and they speak English, sometimes broken English but none the less...

Very true. Not all illegal aliens are Mexican/Hispanic. I have a uncle in the Coast Guard who is stationed out on Guam. He says catching illegals trying to sink in from Asian countries is what happens almost every day.
