AS AN ARMY DOCTOR stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., I was taking my turn in the emergency room one night when a recruit was brought in with fever and abdominal pain. Appendicitis, I thought to myself. Pressing on his abdomen, I asked, "Does this hurt?"
"Y-Y-Yes, sir," he answered through clenched teeth.
Then I examined the area where the appendix is located. "How about here?"
"No," replied the recruit.
"No?" I echoed, surprised.
"I mean," he stammered, "NO, SIR!"
