Military Noise Complaint

I have chosen to post the following on this thread because, although I have tried to check it out, I do not know whether you all have come across it before, or whether it is true, but here goes anyway:-

MILITARY NOISE COMPLAINT.

Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were. A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back. Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall..

When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must have stung quite a bit.

The complaint:

'Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base:

Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 A.M, a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns early bird special?

Any response would be appreciated.

The response:

Regarding 'A wake-up call from Luke's jets' On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m., a perfectly timed four- ship fly-by of F-16s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt. Jeremy Fresques. Capt. Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.

At 9 a. m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend. Based on the letter writer's recount of the fly-by, and because of the jet noise, I'm sure you didn't hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son's flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured.

A four-ship fly by is a display of respect the Air Force gives to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.

The letter writer asks, 'Whom do we thank for the morning air show? The 56th Fighter Wing will make the call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honour that my pilots flew the most honourable formation of their lives.

Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you.....Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

Lt. Col. Grant L. Rosensteel, Jr.

I dont remember when that happened but I live really close to there and I go to arrowhead frequently. I think its really cool seeing the jets fly by. Still haven't seen an f-22. Or would I even be able to? I've seen warthogs, f-16s, c-130, f-15s, and a few c-5 galaxies. I like it. I'm a heavy sleeper.

The story is true. If I remember correctly, the AZ Republic carried the story in their editorial section (letters to the editor).

There has been a lot of controversy over Luke. The people buy houses next to an AF base and then whine about aircraft noise. WTF, over? That's the sound of freedom, you dipsticks. And what are you doing sleeping at 0900 anyway? Lazy people... sheesh. Maybe he worked nights - I don't know.

What I do know is that you must be a few bricks shy of a full load if it never occurred to you than an active Air Force base has these things called airplanes, and those airplanes make noise. That cannot really be that difficult a concept to understand.

stuff like this seriously pisses me off. you knew it was there when you moved, did you think military jets were silent? Same thing about jails and such. They dont build these things overnight, thats why your house was so cheap. BC you live by a jail/base/power plant

That is weird when in AZ I pretty much live right next to Luke AFB (the main gate is less than a mile) and rarely hear the place, at best you get about 10 minutes of noise a couple of times a week which is no worse than anywhere else I have lived nor can I even hear the place while inside.

Personally I couldn't care less about the "sound of freedom" stuff but it is part and parcel of buying a home next to an AFB and people should realise that these locations are going to be noisy from time to time.

I recall sitting outside one day watching several aircraft and the sound was barely higher than having a motorway in the distance certainly nothing to complain about.

Hehe not where I am it isn't, the place just isn't that noisy.
Maybe it is different in other areas around the base as I imagine if you lived on the approach or take off path it could get quite noisy but one would imagine that you would take that into account when purchasing a place in the area.

Last time I was there I can recall one day (out of 60 days) where I noticed the activity and that was about 3pm midweek while we were sitting out on the back terrace (always great to have your own airshow), I have never once heard them while indoors (asleep or otherwise).

We have an area around an air-base in Somerset where all planning for new homes requires triple glazing.

I was once filling my car with fuel, at a local petrol station, early evening, bent forward, when a fighter came in low from behind me, at first I thought my world was coming to an end; the incredible swoop and thunderous tornado was just about on me it seemed, completely disoriented me; as soon as I realised what had happened I wanted to chase him, in a rage. As tho' he had done it on purpose to shake me up! (N0, he didn't even know me....I think!)

Just my 2 cents.

If an airbase is there when you move next to it, you have no right to complain.
If an airbase is built AFTER you move in, you can complain.
Just remember ONE THING as you complain, those are YOUR aircraft, not an airliner full of muslim terrorists.

I live at eth end of eth runway for NAS Oceana in Va Beach, they fly so low over my house I can see the safety wire on the wheel nuts, the base was here when I moved in, I have a white roof with big bold letters on it that every pilot reads on his way back to base. it says "WOLCOME HOME"

You might want to consider to change it to "WELCOME HOME", will make for nice chatter in the canteen...
