MIDDLETOWN--The remains of an Air Force crew member originally from Middletown and 13 others who went missing in 1972 in Laos have been identified, the Pentagon says.
Senior Master Sgt. James Kenneth Caniford was among 14 crew members aboard a C130 gunship that went down in Laos on March 29, 1972, according to Larry Greer, a spokesman for the Department of Defense's POW/MIA office.
Caniford's father, James Caniford, told The Frederick News-Post that he was called yesterday morning by the Air Force with unofficial confirmation that the remains had been found.
"I had been looking for this," Caniford said yesterday afternoon.
Greer said collective remains of the 14 crew members will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. Burial of individual remains is up to the families.
