I was curious, who are the main arms suppliers to:

Iran
Pakistan
Saudi Arabia
Syria

and the combined "small states" like Kuwait, Yemen, etc...

And how do they stand on self-production?
 
Iran and Pakistan biggest dealer in arms is China, and I think Russia helps Pakistan as well. Let me dig up some dirt and i'll edit this post WOOT.
 
Saudi and Pakistan buy heavily from US and Western Europe. Iran has a lot of really old US equipment and gets anything new mostly from Russia. Consider that China buys Russian for much of its gear too. That is one aspect of Russia that remains strong: weapons dealing. Syria is pretty much 100% Russian and I think a bit of French equips mixed in.
 
Pakistan gets most deals from China and to a less extent USA.
Iran got deals from China and Russia.

Saudi Arab and other M.E. states mainly got deals from USA.
 
Well, Syria and Egypt have been favoring Soviet/Russian equipment for years.

Also, the question was asked about Middle East nations being able to build their own gear. Iran and Pakistan are working on developing that capability. Turkey does it already (but for some reason isn't considered Middle Eastern). Other than Turkey, none are in a position to be completely self sufficient in military production yet. Then again, very few nations in the world ARE.

Frog, you're prolly right on the Pakistan and Iran side. What is China sell them mostly?
 
To Pakistan, China sells plenty of Fighter jets and MBT's and Navy ships and almost everything.

To Iran, mostly missiles, also some other stuff but not in large scale.

Also, with Pakistan, there is a big cooperation in producing jets like FC-1 and MBT's like T2000.

I wouldent call Pakistan a part of the ME....The Syrians used to be clients of the USSr, and now they just dont buy, they got no money(and they owe the Russians about 3 billion dollars)...Egypt buys USA weapons, including the M1 Abrams.

I don't think china is the main weapon supplier to Iran and Iraq.In 1980's china have supplied some weapons to them ,but liittle .Russia and usa are main supplier

Pakistan said Wednesday China has agreed to supply its navy with four frigates, with the 750 million-dollar deal all but completed pending financing discussions.

"The deal is complete as far as its technical details are concerned. We are now finalising the financing of the deal," Pakistan navy spokesman Commander Aamir Naeed told AFP.

"Pakistan is not looking for other options, because such selections are made after extensive studies and negotiations," he said.

The frigates, equipped with up-to-date technology, would carry surface-to-surface missiles, anti-aircraft guns, anti-air defence, torpedoes and anti-submarine warfare helicopters, he said.

The chief admiral of Pakistan's navy, Shahid Karimullah, said the frigates were acquired to strengthen a fleet that had "far lesser capabilities" compared with arch-rival India.

"There is a colossal disparity between the two countries and it is not to our liking."

He said while India had "no dearth" of weapons supplies from Russia, Pakistan's armed forces suffered due to sanctions imposed over Islamabad's nuclear programme in the 1990s.

The sanctions were lifted after Pakistan joined the US-led war on terror in the wake of the September 11 attacks in the United States.

Pakistan has since won a spate of economic and business incentives which helped President Pervez Musharraf steer the economy out of stagnation.

However Karimullah said despite lifting of the sanctions the country was facing difficulties in finalising defence deals with European countries.

Yes, China is the main supplier to pakistan, and if ya'll have heard about pakistan developing indigenous missiles n tanks , is all BS.Its all China stuff newly painted by pakis roflmao.

China is going to export 50 J-10 to Pakistan before 2007.
China has opened 3 production lines of J-10 since this year.

In the mean time China just signed a new 48 Su30MK2 deal with Russia, to be delivered before 2007 too.
 
I nwould imagine that iran and syria have to get a lot of there equipment from the black market, as with very few suppliers willing to deal with them, the black market is the best source. For Pakistan and Saudi Arabia i would think France, US, China, mainly
