Mauser 98 question

First of all, place the butt in your shoulder and look through the beginning and the end of the barrel. This should help considerably ;)
 
Works just like any other iron sights from that aera, you just have to keep in mind that it's metric.
And in order to have full use of them you have to find loads duplicating the original load, that could be the tricky part.

There are many variations of the Mauser rifle. Chambered in a number of calibers. But your sights will work in this fashion.

Your rear sight is adjustable for elevation and your front sight is dovetailed (adjustable) for windage. You align your rear sight with the front sight blade. By doing so you have proper sight picture. The photo below is a good example of a proper sight picture.

Eehh... this might depend on your calibre. I would place the/ her butt somewhere else for better firing position. But that's just me, I have never been in the military so that would be me less familiar ;)
