JONES COUNTY, NC -- Three chartered buses full of Camp Lejeune Marines crashed this morning in Jones County.

The Jones County Sheriff's Office says the crash happened on Highway 17 between Pollocksville and Maysville just before 8 a.m. Traffic on Highway 17 from Jacksonville is backed up for miles, according to WITN's Chelsea Donovan.

The buses were carrying Camp Lejeune Marines. School buses are on the way to pick up the Marines. There were reports a school bus may have been involved in the accident, but that is not the case.

The buses are from All Together Tours, which is based in Enfield.
Onslow County officials say they dispatched two fire trucks, several ambulances and their mass casualty unit to the scene.

Reporter Chelsea Donovan says there are hundreds of Camp Lejeune Marines on those buses. One told her that they were heading to Norfolk when the accident happened.

Capt. Carpenter with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit at Camp Lejeune says six Marines were injured. He says four were taken to Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune, one was flown to Pitt County Memorial Hospital and one transported to Craven Regional.

Carpenter says the Marines were headed to Norfolk today ahead of certification exercises scheduled to begin on March 10, in advance of deployment overseas this spring. Carpenter says the Marines would be training with Bataan Strike Group.

At least two Eastcare helicopters were at the scene. One of the drivers
was critically injured and airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital. There are multiple other injuries but none are believed to be serious.

It appears the crash was a chain-reaction. Officials say the middle bus was pushed into the ditch.

WITN has multiple crews now on the scene. Stay tuned for updates on WITN and witn.com.
