Some of Baghdad's flashpoint neghborhoods:

NORTHERN ARC:

SADR CITY: Shiite community of northeastern Baghdad. Stronghold of radical
cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and his Mahdi Army militia.

AZAMIYAH: Upscale Sunni community on east bank of the Tigris River between
Sadr City and Shiite districts to the west. Saddam Hussein made his last
public appearance there before Baghdad fell to U.S. forces in April 2003.

KAZIMIYAH: Shiite neighborhood on west side of the Tigris across the river
from Azamiyah. Al-Sadr's followers control the district's biggest mosque, an
important Shiite shrine.

GHAZALIYA-SHULA: Twin districts together forming the western end of the
northern arc. Ghazaliyah is mostly Sunni, and Shula is Shiite. Both areas
have been the scene of numerous death squad killings.

SOUTHERN ARC:

DORA: Mixed southern neighborhood with Sunnis believed the largest group.
Sunni extremists are seeking to force out Shiites and Christians so they can
control the southern entrance to the capital.

SADIYAH: Sunni area of southern Baghdad west of Dora. Sunni religious
extremists have been active in Sadiyah. Last May an Iraqi tennis coach and
two of his players were killed in Sadiyah, apparently after they were found
wearing shorts.
