Contrary to all the good press Qaddafi is receiving these days nothing has changed for the better for those who oppose his rule.

November 21st, 2006 - Recently, the Libyan regime has been pulling out all the stops to confuse and retard the opposition. From contradictory speeches and addresses, ridiculous lies, and invitations to the opposition to return home. A Libyan who had lived in Europe for the past 20 years returned early November. After a few days of on-and-off harassment and interrogation, he has now simply disappeared.

Thursday, 2 November, 2006: An Algerian court convicted the head of a newspaper and one of its reporters for two articles that allegedly defamed Libyan leader Qadhafi, and sentenced them both to six-month prison terms, the newspaper reported Wednesday. Critics said Tuesday's ruling was aimed at protecting diplomatic ties between Algiers and Tripoli. The executive editor of the Arabic-language Ech-Chourouk, Ali Fodil, and reporter Naila Berrahal were sentenced by a court in the Algiers suburb of Hussein Dey to six-month prison terms and both were fined 20,000 dinars (US$265). The paper was ordered to suspend publication for two months and must pay 500,000 dinars (US$6,685) in damages to Qadhafi. The defense plans to appeal the verdict.

The six deny infecting 426 children with HIV at the hospital in the late 1990s. More than 50 have since died, say Libyan authorities. Many western diplomats and scientists believe poor hygiene standards were responsible for the infections and that the medics became scapegoats.

In 1990, when he was a student in London, his father - a Libyan dissident living in Cairo - was kidnapped, taken back to Tripoli, imprisoned, tortured. He smuggled several letters out from Abu Saleem jail detailing his treatment, but there has been no word since 1995.

Despite the efforts of Muammar Gadafy to gain international legitimacy, the Libyan leader remains active in conflicts across Africa, usually on the side of leaders who are pariahs to the rest of the world. Gadafy's adventures are not the same as his government's support for international terrorist organisations, especially those that pose a direct threat to the United States. But US and European officials say his ability to use his country's oil wealth to project influence around the African continent is irksome and dangerous.

"If it were anywhere but Africa where he was meddling, we would scream bloody murder," said a former US official who dealt with Libya.

Moamar Gaddafi has made his annual September 1st address to the nation. Everything he said was contradictory to what his son and most likely heir Saif-el-Islam had said only recently. Momar asserted that the power and will of the people (him) will be protected from the traitors (opposition groups). And he stated proudly that he has eliminated all resistance to the revolution within Libya, and if they try to plant themselves in Libya once more he will kill them again. We hope that his rant sends a strong message to the weak in the opposition: Saif and Moamar, to put it lightly, are full of lies. They can't be trusted, and even in the event that they in fact change their ways; true progress can't be made until everyone who has committed crimes against the Libyan people (and other peoples) are held accountable. It's not a political game; we musn't forget the thousands of lives lost in Uganda and Chad, the thousands jailed and killed throughout the last 37 years, the Abu-Sleem Massacre, the public executions and broadcasting the demolition of homes, the corruption, the theft, the neglect and the destruction. And for what? It isn't just politics, and these acts can't be undone and must not be forgotten. It has been 37 years, let us not stand by and let it become 38.

Why are we turning a blind eye and embracing this :cen: as a friend? I'm baffled by the absurdity of the situation. Not only are we not targetting this twit, we're arresting people who are trying to free their country...

Thursday, 25 May, 2006: More than 500 police officers carried out raids yesterday targeting Libyans in Britain suspected of helping to plot and finance terrorist attacks in Libya. The investigation focused partly on a Birmingham-based charity that has been accused of acting as a front for an outlawed extremist group linked to al-Qa'ida. Eight people were being questioned last night after 19 properties were searched in the operation led by Greater Manchester Police and MI5. Thirteen of the raids were in Greater Manchester, three in Birmingham, and one each in Middlesbrough, London, and Liverpool. Among the buildings searched was the Birmingham office of the Sanabel Relief Agency. Sanabel has been accused of acting as a front for the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, which is trying to overthrow Col Qadhafi's regime. [The Independent]

This Info is good for us and for the others that do not know of Libya's Government and what it is doing to its people, The USA must STOP suporting the libyan Government at all cost. The Libyan people are Suffering from it, And there is street talk in libya that the usa and other countrys are suporting Qaddaffi's Gov, Thay allso ask why are the Americans Supporting him.
I got to say Bulldog this is a good Thread.

The existence of political prisoners in Libya is denied categorically and repeatedly in public statements by Col. Gaddafi and other Libyan officials. Gaddafi also claims that Libyan prisons house only drug trafickers and other common criminals. However, as noted in the Amnesty International 2000 Report, the Gaddafi regime has failed to allow independent human rights observers to investigate his claims.

The listing below, while revealing only a fraction of the atrocities in Libya, does refute Gaddafi's claims. Many Libyans have suffered for decades as political prisoners, and many have died in prison under torture and deteriorating health conditions. The listing also shows that Libyan prisons house many educated and established professionals, whose rights are violated without charges, or through sham trials and arbitrary judgements. The information below was compiled from databases of independent international organizations, as cited. This is a link to it http://members.tripod.com/sijill/prison/

Libyan Intelligence Service activity in the UK
THE SECURITY SERVICE

Since his arrival as Head of the Libyan Interests Section
in London in July 1993, we have been monitoring the activities
of Khalifa Ahmad BAZELYA. We have concluded that he is actively
engaged in carrying out tasks on behalf of the Libyan
Intelligence Service (LIS).

They have Libyan secret police monitoring and taking action against dissidents in the UK. And now it seems the British government is turing a blind eye, for petroleum and natural gas perhaps??

There are more immediate and pressing problems to think about and if a tyrant like Gaddafi can be used to fight them so much the better.

I believe that whist it might be tempting to jump into bed with the Devil or a Dictator or two for short-term gain against a common enemy, it inevitably follows that such a partnership goes sour or comes back to haunt so that the short-term gain turns into a long-term nightmare.

A new partnership with Gaddafi is potentially one of these and Saddam in the 1980's was certainly one when he was propped up by the West in order to counter Iran.

We can add Manuel Noreiga deposed and now incarcerated former leader of Panama who was at one time "of use".

Speaking of Noriega, I see he is due to be released from prison on September 9, 2007. I wonder how long it'll take him to hook up with the likes of Chavez and get back to his old ways? :sarc:

And speaking of "old ways" Qa-daffy might have turned over a few piss ants for trial and dismantled his nuke program but he is not a changed man nor is his government and its behaviour something responsible people can turn a blind eye to for convenience of the moment.

Not good. Every human being deserves to be free and has a right to basic freedoms. Imagine you were in that situation... Would you be okay with it?

Sleeping with the Snake

So you are saying that it is ok to, "Sleep with an old Snake" and tack a bite from it.??????????

True to His Terrorist Ways

I just dont want all of you to forget.............Read thisThis week marks the 20th anniversary of the U.S. military strike against Libya. On April 14, 1986, President Ronald Reagan ordered the U.S. Air Force to attack military targets in Libya in response to Libyan involvement in a terrorist attack on a West Berlin disco which killed two U.S. servicemen. In a nationally televised address after the strike, Reagan declared, "Today we have done what we had to do. If necessary, we shall do it again." He described Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi's record of terrorism and subversion in Africa. He acknowledged that he bore no grudge against ordinary Libyans, "decent people caught in the grip of a tyrant."Two decades later, little has changed. Qadhafi continues to support terrorism. While he sought Western grace for ransoming kidnapped hostages in March 2000, the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group then used the $25 million to amplify its terrorism. According to U.S. Pacific Command, "Speedboats used in other kidnappings were allegedly bought with the money, as was a rocket launcher that killed an army captain in pursuit of the fugitives." On March 23, 2006, Qadhafi feted Hamas political leader Khalid Mishaal in Tripoli. The Libyan strongman promised to fund Hamas, even as Mishaal pledges more terrorism.http://www.nationalreview.com/voices/eljahmi200604130751.asp

code-named “Parabellum”,

Mohka, do you have any links to some of these stories, even in Arabic??

The Maltese police yesterday said the Maltese company implicated in a large-scale investigation, code-named “Parabellum”, into the trafficking of weapons, was run by an Italian individual who has been arrested in Italy. On Monday, the Italian authorities announced they had interrupted an international arms trafficking deal that was to have operated between China, Malta and Libya, and which planned to supply hundreds of thousands of weapons and millions of rounds of ammunition to Iraqi insurgents.http://www.independent.com.mt/news.asp?newsitemid=46282Bulldogg Please believe me, I have so much to say, but this will not be the right time for me to say it nore righting it will help..
The Maltese police yesterday said the Maltese company implicated in a large-scale investigation, code-named “Parabellum”, into the trafficking of weapons, was run by an Italian individual who has been arrested in Italy. On Monday, the Italian authorities announced they had interrupted an international arms trafficking deal that was to have operated between China, Malta and Libya, and which planned to supply hundreds of thousands of weapons and millions of rounds of ammunition to Iraqi insurgents.CNN yesterday reported that the Italian authorities believe the weapons were to have been shipped to Malta before being sent on to their final destination. The Maltese police yesterday said they have so far not received any requests for assistance from the Italian authorities, nor have they received any information in connection with the Italian investigation.Investigations carried out by the Maltese police have found that no Maltese nationals were involved in the plot, but rather an Italian with a company registered in Malta, which company is not active at the moment, the police said. The company in question, according to a statement issued by the police yesterday evening, has a number of offices spread across the world. The police added that investigations into the case are in hand. The planned arms deal was to have seen the unnamed Maltese company acting as a middleman, for a “notable profit”, between Chinese weapons producers and Libyan buyers, who would, in turn, move the weapons on to Iraqi insurgents, according to coded emails recovered by Italian agents. In the process of their investigations, which had been carried out over the first months of 2006, the Italian authorities discovered a commission of 500,000 AK-47 Kalashnikov assault rifles and some 10 million rounds of ammunition that was to have been illegally shipped to Libya and on to Iraq. The company, according to the Carabinieri, had in fact already sent samples of arms and munitions to the Libyan purchasers. No weapons are reported to have been confiscated during the enquiry and it is thought the main consignment was still pending when interrupted.http://www.independent.com.mt/news.asp?newsitemid=46282
