The Arizona Cardinals signed quarterback Matt Leinart to a contract Monday that could pay the rookie up to $51 million over six years.
Leinart, who was expected to begin training camp today in Flagstaff, Ariz., after a two-week absence, will be guaranteed $14 million, said Tom Condon, Leinart's agent.
The rookie could earn up to $51 million if he meets the terms of escalation clauses that would give him additional money the more he plays.
Leinart was the last first-round pick to reach a contract agreement.
Earlier Monday, Cardinals Coach Dennis Green criticized Leinart and his representatives for rejecting ``a more than generous'' offer from the team.
• More examinations on Clinton Portis' sore shoulder did little to reveal whether the Washington Redskins' star running back would be healthy for the season opener. Portis partially dislocated his shoulder in Sunday's 19-3 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
• Dallas receiver Terrell Owens missed his 12th consecutive practice when the Cowboys began their final week of workouts in Oxnard. He came out a few minutes before the session, carrying cleats and a long-sleeve shirt, and took what has become his customary position on a stationary bike.
After the two-hour practice, Owens remained on the field to run routes and catch passes thrown by a coach. Owens appeared to run at full speed, often holding his hands on his hips after returning to the line, and made cuts without any problems.
``This is definitely an improvement from last week,'' Owens said. ``It's all encouraging signs.''
Said Coach Bill Parcells: ``We need to see something here pretty soon. That is the truth.''
``We need to get him into the offense. Right now, he has missed a lot of work.''
• As Curtis Martin rehabs his injured right knee, the New York Jets acquired running back Lee Suggs from the Cleveland Browns for defensive back Derrick Strait. The trade could be an indication the Jets believe Martin, the NFL's No. 4 all-time leading rusher, can no longer play.
Suggs wasn't able to stay healthy for the Browns, who selected him in the fourth round of the 2003 draft. Suggs has rushed for 1,048 yards and four touchdowns as a pro.
• Chicago Bears safety Mike Brown is sidelined indefinitely after ``a twinge'' in his right Achilles tendon.
• Seattle defensive tackle Russell Davis could miss the next month after tearing the plantar fascia in his right foot, and center Robbie Tobeck won't play in Sunday's exhibition at Indianapolis after having minor surgery to remove bone chips from his left elbow.
• Philadelphia defensive end Jerome McDougle, who missed the entire 2005 season after being shot in the abdomen, will miss at least three weeks while recovering from two broken ribs. The injury occurred Saturday.
• Indianapolis defensive end Dwight Freeney returned to workouts after missing four practices with a sore shoulder.
• Buffalo Bills Coach Dick Jauron said J.P. Losman has grabbed the lead in Buffalo's quarterback derby, ahead of Kelly Holcomb and Craig Nall.
