TORONTO - Maple Leafs center Michael Peca broke his right leg in a 3-1 loss at Chicago and is expected to miss at least three months, Toronto general manager John Ferguson said.
Ferguson said Peca had surgery Saturday for a fractured tibia at the base of his right knee. He also suffered ligament damage.
Peca collided with Chicago defenseman Jim Vandermeer in the Toronto zone with 5:17 left in the first period Friday night. Vandermeer received a major penalty for kneeing and a game misconduct.
A 12-year veteran, Peca has four goals and 11 assists in 35 games this season. He signed a one-year deal with the Leafs in the offseason. He has 164 goals and 245 assists in 728 career games.
"He's not a guy you immediately replace," said Ferguson, who declined to say if Peca has played his last game for Toronto. "We're solely focused on his health and his career."
