HERMISTON, Ore. — Officials say the Umatilla Chemical Depot in Eastern Oregon has started the next-to-last phase of destroying its chemical weapons.
VX-filled land mines were readied for incineration Thursday. They are the last of various types of weapons containing VX to be destroyed.
The facility began work in 2004 and has been destroying bombs, rockets, artillery shells and other weaponry containing, first, sarin and, then, VX nerve gas.
Umatilla officials say the work on the VX land mines is expected to take two months, followed by five months to ready the facility to destroy the last of its chemical weapons, mustard blister agent. That is expected to take one to two years.
