KUWAIT CITY – U.S. Ambassador Deborah K. Jones said Monday that although Kuwaitis account for “1 percent or less” of foreign insurgents fighting in neighboring Iraq, the funding of the insurgents by some Kuwaitis is a concern that must be addressed.
In April, one of eight Kuwaitis released from the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay carried out a suicide bombing that targeted Iraqi security forces in the the northern Iraqi city of Mosul that killed at least seven people.
Mubarak al-Bathali, a Kuwaiti Sunni fundamentalist, has been detained in Kuwait after telling the Al-Qabas daily in an interview published last month that he has personally sent fighters from Kuwait to Iraq by way of Syria.
