AMMAN, Jordan - Jordanian police are investigating the suspicious death of
an Iraqi family of three in a fire at their apartment on the outskirts of
Amman, an official said Saturday.

Police spokesman Maj. Bashir al-Da'aja said "preliminary investigations are
pointing to a criminal act, because the family's car was set on fire just
the day before."

He identified the dead in the Wednesday fire as Hadi Naji al-Lami, 43, and
his unnamed wife and daughter.

Police said three others were injured in the dawn fire in the Jandaweel
district, 15 kilometers (10 miles) west of Amman.

Al-Da'aja said preliminary forensic examinations showed the family died of
smoke inhalation.

He said that no other details were immediately available.

Unofficial estimates say that more than 800,000 Iraqis have escaped to
neighboring Jordan since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
