April 12, 2008 A Kaneohe Marine is accused of forging data for credit cards

Marine Cpl. Daniel Alfieri pleaded no contest to charges that he stole the identities of five fellow Kaneohe Marines while they were away fighting the war in Iraq.
Alfieri, 28, of Syracuse, N.Y., also asked Circuit Judge Randal Lee for a deferral, giving him the opportunity to stay out of jail and keep his criminal record clean.
Deputy City Prosecutor Chris Van Marter said Alfieri deserves jail time.
"His fellow Marines have enough to worry about serving in Iraq. But to have to deal with the problems associated with identity theft at the same time, I think it's very despicable what Mr. Alfieri has done," he said.
Van Marter said Alfieri personally knows the four male and one female Marine and had previously deployed with them to Iraq.
Alfieri's lawyer John Schum told Lee his client is being treated for post-traumatic stress disorder and is taking medication for a bipolar condition.
Van Marter said Alfieri's enlistment ended last October but that the Marine Corps suspended his discharge pending the outcome of the state criminal case. Alfieri is not in custody but confined to Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe, Van Marter said.
Alfieri was accused of using personal information of his fellow Marines to apply for credit cards by telephone and over the Internet. He stole a credit card already issued to one of the Marines, and applied for and received another card using that person's personal information.
He used the cards to make purchases of at least $977 at grocery and retail stores, restaurants and at the Marine Corps Exchange. He also attempted to withdraw $600 from an American Savings Bank automated teller machine but was unsuccessful.
Alfieri pleaded no contest to 14 counts of identity theft and eight other related charges. Each of the charges is a Class C felony punishable by up to five years in prison and $10,000 fine.
Lee will either sentence Alfieri or grant him a deferral July 18.
