Seventeen Jacksonville-based Marines are being questioned in Camp Lejeune, N.C., after allegations of misconduct were raised against some members of the unit, according to Marine Lt. Col. Curtis Hill.
The Bravo Company, 4th Assault Amphibian Battalion, was deployed to Al Anbar province of Iraq in March. The group returned to Camp Lejeune in October, and 92 of the Marines returned to Jacksonville on Sunday.
Additional information about the investigation was not released.
The Marines were ordered to stay in North Carolina, but they are not restricted to their barracks or to the base, Hill said.
"The 17 Marines aren't necessarily the subject or focus of the investigation," Hill said. "To protect their privacy, at this point we won't identify them. If as a result of the investigation, there are charges filed ... they would be identified. But it's way too early to talk about that."
The company was deployed to handle counterinsurgency operations and protect infrastructure in Iraq, where the conduct in question occurred, according to The Associated Press. Part of their duties was to protect a dam.
Some family members were upset over the Marines being kept back. Karen Duehring-Widmer came to the Jacksonville area from Tampa to greet her nephew over the weekend. She found out Saturday night that he would not be coming.
"I had to practically peel my sister off the wall," her brother said.
