Iwo Jima

Hello, I'm curious if I can visit on Iwo Jima? I heard it's for US and Japanese military personnel and family members who frought on Iwo Jima in 1945 only. (correct me if I'm mistake) Well, my great uncle frought on Iwo Jima. So, how can I visit Iwo Jima? I know it is Japan's Radar Defence System.

It's a Japanese Naval base and is closed to all civilians except for government sanctioned visits.

This is just a guess but I would recommend contacting your nearest Japanese embassy/consulate and finding out what the requirements are or maybe contact someone doing tours there to see whats possible ie http://www.stephenambrosetours.com/tours/pacific-it.html.

Coincidentally, today marks the 62nd anniversary of the landing of US Marines on Iwo Jima in 1945.
