We've heard the news of the Ceasefire Agreement between Israel and Palestine. It's all over the headlines. What does it really mean? Does it accomplish big things? Does it accomplish nothing at all? Is it more an agreement to eventually work toward something that really does qualify as a true "Ceasefire"??

Well, firstly, it's a step in the right direction. But the porblem is until the PLO disarmes Hammas and Jihad, these orgs will try to distabeize the cease fire. Hammas did agree to stop the shooting, but I wouldent trust Hammas further than I can shoot at them... :D

The thin gis, the PLO really have little control over the vast majority of the terror groups. It's all very well for them to declare a peace agreement, but nothing stops a disgruntled faction of Hammass/Islamic Jihad from launching an attack, and then we're back at square one again.

simple, in the words of politics and military, a period where both sides, especially the palastenian side could rest and rearm, train itself for a next fight

Care to rephrase that to make your point...more obvious?

it is very simple, at times of peace both sides, esepcially the palastians sects and organizations, will use this time well for another period of this feud

maybe Isreal can tolerate some attacks of Hammas and Jihad so Isreal won't take revenge, and peace talking can still continue

do u think Isreal can do that?

it depends on the scale of the attack. Some morons firing off AK's, maybe, but a large scaled attack with heavy casualties on civilians or the military, no. Any Nation would react to that, with all force they deem necersary.

Some say that terrorism doesn't work. It actually works great in Israel for keeping things EXACTLY like they are. It works extremely well for ensuring that the Palestinians circumstances never improve.

I think it's a good sign. Unfortunately, some people seem bent on destroying the state of Israel and until that changes, we're always gonna see terrorism in the Middle East. :(

It also depends on how much of a compromise in terms of territory Israel will be prepared to make. The Palaestinians might want more than the Israeli's can possibly afford to give.

who knows

Ceasefire is better than nothing. Even though we do not know whether or not htis will work, its put a move on trying to make the country a better place :p

I would like to see a peace settlement a long last. The Palestinian People have suffer long enough and too many Israelis and Palestinians have died over stubbornly refusing compromise. I'm cautiously optimistic.

The 100 billion dollar question is this: How can the current Palestinian leadership convince groups like Hamas to cease all attacks?? Do they even have that capability??

Hamas will never give up arms - They would loose on any deal with the world. Terrorists are Terrorists and I dont think this world are as forgiving as the old world was towards terrorists. Hamas will probably flame everything up to an stand still again if not Abbas strike`s his fist in to the tables in the rooms of power and give those murders a powerful signal. Lay down your weapons and get amnesty, if not you are not wellcome anymore in this state. Simple it sounds but I think that is the only way to make lasting peace in that region of the middle east. But I sincerly hope that they can make something work this time even if Hamas may stay on the streets and excite the poore ppl to kill the "evil Zionism". There will always be small pockets of Adolf`s (look at Europe) in this world if the civilized world continues to coddle with extremist ppl.

Israel must accept that there will continue to be some extremists no matter what. I don't think Israel is naive enough to believe that the Palestinian leadership can make all extremists disappear forever.

Actually, I think that Israel would probably be happy enough if Palestinian Leaders will agree to:
1.) Stop funding terrorist groups.
2.) Actively seek out and destroy terrorist groups.

At face value, those requests seem easy enough. Going deeper is where the we run into difficulty. The Palestinian Leadership has to be very careful to try to keep all of their people happy. That is tricky. Either of those actions would have to be handled very delicately. I don't envy the Palestinian leadership.

Have you seen their bank accounts? :D

But let me say a few things. The PLO is much bigger and stronger than Hammas and Jihad put togather. However, it is more specialized in gurrila warfare against military targets and shooting attacks on civilians. Hammas is more of a suicide bomber specialist. They are also more experienced at rocket attacks. why is this important? The PLO dose not want Hammas to lay down it's weapons, because they want to use it like the stick in the stick and carrot deal...what they want is to keep Hammas from shooting now, but to be able to unleash it if Israel dose not accept their demands. This has been this way since the Oslo agrremant, and it's no diffrent now. Until they stop this policy, the peace is a good distance away.

Has there been a ceasefire in the past at all between the two rivals? If memory serves me right, there hasn't ever been a cease fire since they started quarreling. I say this is a big accomplishment.
