Islamic State shelling of Syrian school area kills nine

Islamic State militants shelled a school district in eastern Syria on Tuesday, killing at least nine students and wounding around 20 other people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said. Syrian state media said nine girls had been killed and said "shells fired by terrorists" had hit the government-held area in Deir al-Zor city, the capital of the province of the same name, which is mostly held by Islamic State fighters. Schools have frequently been a target of violence in Syria.
