Ireland sending team to Iraq to liaise on kidnapped journalist

DUBLIN, Oct 20 (AFP) - The Irish government said Thursday is sending a high level team to Baghdad in a bid to secure the release of kidnapped Irish reporter Rory Carroll.

Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern said his government was determined to do all within its power to secure the release of Carroll, 33, who hails from Blackrock in south Dublin.

Carroll was working for the British newspaper The Guardian in the Iraqi capital.

Ahern said in a statement that following a review of the situation, the government "has decided to send a high-level team to Baghdad tomorrow to liaise with all relevant contacts and to report back to the government.

"The team will be headed by Ambassador Antoin MacUnfraidh, currently Ambassador to Finland and who served as Irish Ambassador to Baghdad before the first Gulf War, and will include senior personnel from the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Defence Forces and the Garda Siochana (police)."

Ahern said the government would "closely review the situation on a continuing basis".

Kidnapped Irish reporter Rory Carroll was released by the kidnappers and returned to Ireland on Sunday 23 Oct.
