Iraqi reinforcement troops deployed to the oil-producing southern city of Amarah on Thursday as the military geared up for another crackdown against Shiite militias, officials said.
Amarah is the capital of Missan province, a hub of weapons smuggling from Iran. The U.S.-trained quick-reaction force from the Iraqi army was awaiting orders from the Defense Ministry, said Marine Lt. Col. Chris Charleville.
The same troops have been successful in clearing out militants from the port city of Basra.
Amarah, a safe haven for Muqtada al-Sadr's Mahdi Army militia, is separated from Iran by marshes.
