WARSAW, Poland_Iraq's defense minister said Wednesday that security in his
country was moving "in the right direction," despite continued violence in
Baghdad.

Abdul-Qader Mohammed Jassim al-Mifarji, in Warsaw for talks with Polish
counterpart Radek Sikorski, also criticized the media's coverage of security
in Iraq, and said that safety was improving across the country.

"The security situation in Iraq is going in the right direction," al-Mifarji
told reporters in comments translated into Polish. "The media around the
world concentrates on the situation in Baghdad, while Baghdad is only one of
18 provinces in Iraq. We have 14 provinces with a very good security
situation."

On Wednesday in Iraq, two bombs exploded in Baghdad, killing at least nine
and wounding 39, a day after the president predicted that bloodshed would
mostly end by year's end.

Al-Mifarji also thanked Poland for helping overthrow Saddam Hussein's regime
in 2003, and praised Polish soldiers for training Iraqi troops and for their
security role in Iraq since the war.

He said Poles won their freedom in a similar fight against Nazism and
communism.

"Like Poles who fought against fascism and Nazism for many years and won
their freedom, Iraqis are now fighting against a new fascism _ against a
terror that is our common enemy," he said.

Warsaw sent combat forces to the U.S.-led war in Iraq in 2003. Some 900
Polish soldiers currently head a multinational division south of Baghdad.
