KARBALA, Iraq, Oct 25, 2006 (AFP) - Iraqi police in the southern city of
Karbala have rounded up two kidnapping gangs and rescued two of their
victims, police chief Major General Mohammed Abu al-Walid told AFP on
Wednesday.

"After receiving reports that terror elements had kidnapped two citizens in
Al-Zabilia and Taqa north of Karbala, police raided and number of addresses
and set them free, arresting 10 terrorists in the process," he said.

The raids were part of a new aggressive strategy adopted by Walid in the
past ten days since he was named Karbala's new police chief, with a brief
to act against illegal militias in the Shiite holy city.

In all, 50 arrests have been made in operations against death squads and
armed robbers, he said.

Iraq is in the grip of a vicious sectarian war between rival Sunni and
Shiite factions and a violent insurgency against the US-backed government.
