NASIRIYAH, Iraq, Sept 21, 2006 (AFP) - Iraq on Thursday took control of
security in the southern province of Dhi Qar from US-led coalition forces in
the violence-ravaged country.

The relatively peaceful province is the second of the country's 18 provinces
to be handed over by the US-led forces to Iraqi forces after the July
transfer of power in the Al-Muthanna province.

Nearly 2,000 Italian and Romanian troops were in charge of security for Dhi
Qar, of which Nasiriyah is the capital.
