Republican presidential candidate John McCain met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari Sunday morning at his campaign headquarters in Crystal City, Va. The pair held a closed meeting before each making a statement to reporters.
Mr. Zebari said he would also be meeting with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama during his U.S. visit but he emphasized he wished to stay neutral from the political campaign.
"We are not a part, in fact, of the U.S. election whatsoever. I think this is a decision for the American public," Mr. Zebari said. "But it's in our interest, in fact, to brief both candidates on the reality of the situation, the way we see it from our perspective, from people who've been at the thick of this conflict."
Both Sen. McCain and Mr. Zebari remarked on the role of the troop surge in Iraq.

Mr. Zebari responded by complimenting the U.S.
