BAGHDAD, Dec 15 (AFP) - Iraq is extending a probe into allegations of
torture at an underground bunker in Baghdad and results will not be known
until next year, the official in charge of the investigation said Thursday.
"The length of the investigation has been extended. I do not expect to have
the report before the end of the year," Deputy Prime Minister Roj Shaways
told AFP after voting in Iraq's general election.
"It's a complicated matter and the investigation will be lengthy to be
transparent," added Shaways, the head of the investigating committee.
Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari in mid-November ordered a probe into
reports that detainees had been tortured, beaten and starved at the
clandestine interior ministry facility where more than 150 mostly Sunnis
were being held.
At the time he said the results of the inquiry would be available within two
weeks.
US forces who raided the bunker said they found 167 undocumented detainees
and arrested police who had been guarding them.
On Tuesday, the US ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, condemned the
latest revelations of abuse following the discovery by US and Iraqi forces
of a second interior ministry prison housing detainees who bore signs of
abuse.
